'The Avengers': The Reviews Are In!
Reviews are glowing for director Joss Whedon's star-studded superhero epic.

Impossibly high expectations, assemble! The moment that Marvel fans far and wide have been waiting years for has arrived at last: "The Avengers," directed by Joss Whedon and featuring a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, has finally landed in theaters nationwide.
Anyone worried that Marvel couldn't live up to its own hype with "Avengers" need only look at the reviews to see that Earth's Mightiest Heroes have indeed performed to the best of their ability. Not only is "Avengers" an international box-office success and a soon-to-be domestic hit, the film is also adored by critics, geeks and moviegoers of all other assorted shapes and sizes.

The Man Behind The Curtain
"As screenwriter, sharer of story credit with Zak Penn and director, Whedon is the key reason why this $220-million behemoth of a movie is smartly thought out and executed with verve and precision. It may be overly long at two hours, 23 minutes, but so much is going on you might not even notice. Whedon's biggest success, creating TV's 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer,' was nowhere near this scale. But he is a third-generation television writer who was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing 'Toy Story,' and he's got an innate gift for bringing stories like this to life with the energy and intelligence that should be popular entertainment's birthright but rarely is." — Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times

The Laugh Factor
" 'The Avengers' may be one of the funniest movies of the year. Whereas 'Iron Man 2' was overdose, having other leads to dilute Downey Jr.'s manic mouth helps Tony Stark finally land his punchlines. But Hulk takes the cake, Whedon mining the towering green monster for all-out destruction and physical comedy. While the star of today's Unpacked event is certainly Samsung's Galaxy S III, every hero can benefit from a few good sidekicks -- or in the case of this Android superphone, accessories. Up for offer will be a variety of goods including a flip cover, battery-charging stand, spare battery, car dock, "metallic docking stand" and HDMI adapter. Perhaps most interesting pieces, however, are the AllCast wireless dongle (which appears to be direct competition to HTC's Media Link HD video-mirroring device), a Wireless Charging Kit and an S-pebble MP3 player that plays nice with the scan and match feature in the Music Hub app. We're gathering all the details we can, so in the meantime grab a look at the gallery below.

Flattr Finally Lands Big Dailymotion Deal, But Its Business Model Still Sucks
Flattr, a social micro-payments platform which we've likened to a "Like button with cash" is to partner with the second biggest video site on the Web, Dailymotion. The distribution deal is targeted at Dailymotion's key content creators in its Motionmakers category. A cynic might call this a mere test of the platform to see if it can be rolled out across the site more widely. But both parties insist this is a card-carrying 'deal'. Suffice it to say Flattr has been crying out for a big distribution partner and yearned after one for the last two years. But TechCrunch remains skeptical that even this deal will lift the startup out of the early adopter crowd into the mainstream as there remain significant issues with its business model. 'Hunger Games' Director Gary Ross Circles 'Houdini'
After turning down 'Catching Fire,' Ross may helm big-screen adaptation of 'The Secret Life of Houdini.'

"Hunger Games" fans were dismayed when director Gary Ross released a statement saying he wasn't going to helm the film's sequel, "Catching Fire." His previous works have been few and far between. Before adapting the dystopian novel, Ross directed "Pleasantville" in 1998 and "Seabiscuit" in 2003, and fans wondered if he would disappear off Hollywood's radar for a while. But Ross' next project might happen sooner rather than later.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ross is in talks with Summit to direct "Houdini," an adaptation of the book "The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero" by William Kalush and Larry Sloman. While recounting the master escape artist's life from poverty to fame, the biography suggests that the magician who commanded the attention of countless audiences worked as a spy for Britain and the Secret Service.
In Lionsgate's own statement on Gary Ross' departure from "The Hunger Games" franchise, they wrote, "[Gary Ross] did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future."
Since Lionsgate bought Summit earlier this year, it's quite possible this is the other project they had in mind for the director. THR also reports that Summit optioned the rights to the book back in March of 2009 and their goal is to turn it into an action franchise in the same vein as "Indiana Jones" and "Sherlock Holmes." Noah Oppenheim already wrote the script, but having penned every screenplay he's directed, it's possible Ross may want to edit or re-write it if he signs on for the project.
Coincidentally, THR notes that Francis Lawrence, the director who signed on for "Catching Fire," is attached to his own Houdini venture for Columbia Pictures.
